Doing it wrong or are backups inefficient?

volgens John Wells.

I have a number of very large courses I am backing up.  They have 20-40 topic sections and a variety of documents, assignments, forums, et al, in each section in a Windows 2003, Apache 2, MySQL 5.x, moodle 2.0.5 environment

Mostly, if I try to backup the entire course it times out in my browser after 120 seconds.  I have manipulated every setting I can and nothing changes this value.  I have taken to breaking down a course into as many as 20 backup files.

In the first backup I include enrolled users and the General section that is at the top of each moodle course.  Then, I repeat the process with a topic section or two but uncheck the Include Enrolled Users box.  I have noticed that no matter how full or empty a course, the .mbz file for every section I backup is about the same size.

I am in the middle of backing up a course with 40 sections, 13 of which are totally empty.  Users+general .mbz is 355.8MB, the section 1-2 mbz is 355.6MB, and sections 19-32 is also 355.6MB.  Sections 19-32 are completely empty of course content.

Based on past experience, every single backup I make in that course will be within a few MB of 355MB.

Why is that????

On a side note, why also does the first backup go in the Course Backups section but each subsequent .mbz file end up in the Private area?
