Really has nothing to do with version of Moodle ... it's an operating system thang. So, the only thing one might do differently in 2.x is to create the mount point in moodledata/repository/ Depending on how one backs up, that could make your backup of moodledata folder larger than it needs to be. The mount point could be outside of anything Moodle. Moodle just needs to know where and be granted access to the mount point.
Same applies though ... could be slow ... need a way to monitor the mount point. If the mount point 'disappears' and no notification alerting anyone is sent, one may think the auto backups are working just fine when in truth ... they are not. Uhhhh - not good when you need a backup! :|
