Course reuse is a 2 step process rolled into one.
What if do the old 2 step ... back up first, then restore?

When you copy you have to give the new copied course a Course Full name and a Course shot name as well as select the course category the copy is to be restored to. Would think one needs to give those with slight differences.
At the bottom of the screen there are 2 buttons ...
one has "copy and return' the other is 'copy and view'.
Which of those are you clicking?
Copy and return puts it in a background process.
Can be seen in admin/courses with a title of
"Whatever Copy"
Can you make a no user backup - which should remove references to those custom fields upon restore.
