To add to the above: it's not the mbz file that has a problem getting bigger than 550mb. I have continued running coursenbackups by freeing the crashed tasks and Moodle is handling them one by one.
I now have an .mbz file of 729MB.
But... when I inspect these backup files, I have yet to find a course file above 512 mb. So my guess is: if a course contains resources bigger than 512 mb, the backup will crash.
