Re: Efficient backup of Moodle site

Hi,

First of all, it would be important to know what's the aim of these full backups, and how often they're done.

Like Emma explained, deleting courses would be the most efficient way to regain storage. I'd also recommend to wait (at least 1 day, and up to 4 days) to be sure all data in the recylce bin is deleted (or deactivate recycle bin before deleting courses).

Also, most place is taken by filedir directory. You could also have lot of space taken by temp/backup, if you have incomplete backups (they let directories full of data). I'd rather exclude the whole moodledata/temp directory than take only filedir.

The important thing is to have the backup of all parts (DB, data, moodle) coherent, at the same time. I would'nt take the risk to have an incomplete moodledata/filedir backup.

But depending of how you do your backup, you can perhaps make incremental backups, or just rsync this directory to a backup place.

HTH,
Séverin
