Thanks for your thoughtful reply, Ken.
My question is strictly technical, and I do believe it's in the correct category.
Our retention policy (set by people who work at a higher paygrade that I) is two years past the end date of a course, so we will not have 'forever' courses.
Many of our instructors used to just reset a course, but we took that ability away. Now, we create new courses (we call them shells) and keep the old ones for the required retention period. The new shells are all created from the same simple template. The majority of instructors, however, want a copy of their old shell. Some wanted the last version, some wanted the last version from the same period last year (e.g., Sept->Sept, not Jan->Sept), and it became unmanageable for our small department, so we're now putting the onus on the instructor to do their own backup and restore into the new shell. I KNOW that there will be some instructors who cannot wait for the new shell to be created so will try to restore into a previous version. This is what I want to stop from happening.
