You can run automatic backup from the website manually - if you go to scheduled tasks, you should be able to start it there and then it might give you an idea of what is erroring out. Instead of changing the frequency of the backup, why not just keep one or two copies. That will stop your space continuing to fill up as moodle will automatically delete old copies.
