Thanks for thinking with me towards a solution, Ken!

1. Our moodle is hosted on a Linux platform.

2. It's not really a question of paranoia, I think, but rather a question of keeping things simple and straightforward. The company that hosts our site uses the same "rules" for all their customers. That means, no ftp access, no individualized plugins and a standard backup-procedure: nl. they provide you with a full estored online copy of your entire moodle, but they only go one day back.

3. All our teachers (35) have requested backups over the years. I get about 10 requests per year of the teachers, usually because they, or a student, accidentally deleted a file. Next to these requests we need 2 full backups every year for possible inspections from the Ministry of Education. Until now, I always request a database dump and the moodle data map from the company where our moodle is hosted, but they always take more than a week to send me the files and the teachers cannot change anything on their moodle pages, which is a nuisance, as they usually want to clean up their courses during that period. I intend to also use the individual backups for this purpose in the future.
