MBZ file not recognized

A friend purchased, from a professional organization, a course that is supposed to work in Moodle. I've been trying to restore it (using Moodle 1.9 still) but when I upload it to the files area in Moodle 1.9, I don't get the "restore" option. I tried renaming the MBZ file as a ZIP file and then I did get the "restore" option. But when I tried restoring it, I got the familiar error:

Error checking backup file. moodle.xml not found at root level of zip file.
I tried unzipping the file and looking for a file called moodle.xml (or is it file.moodle.xml?) but no such file is there. Is it possible that my friend purchased a Moodle course that is not restore-able? There is a moodle_backup.xml file, making me think that someone knew what s/he was doing when s/he created the course in Moodle.

Another thought: might the course have been created in Moodle 2.x and these courses are not restore-able to Moodle 1.9?

I'm an amateur Moodle site admin so I'm grateful for any advice from you pros. Thanks. - Peter
