Yes, you do recall correctly. It was me who had those troubles, and what I did was to rebuild manually as many links as I could. The original problem manifested itself as missing student pictures. It just snowballed from there.
Anyway, your usual thoroughness has given me much to chew on. I don't know what you do for a living, but its obvious you have a talent for technical writing (I used to do that)
It will be the weekend before I can get to this because obviously I need to study the situation. But you have put me on the right track.
