In the test-case there would be different IPs, the testserver is just an old desktop-computer running LAMP. It gets an IP via dhcp (dhcp always would give it the same ip) and has an internal DNS-Record that resolves moodle-test.my-school.com and the server would get a *.my-school.com cert so that there are no problems regarding https.
The intention is testing updates and "dangerous" operations/changes in a safe environment before applying them to the production environment.
