Issues with aliases in “File system” repositories when restoring courses in Moodle 4.1

Hello everyone,

I am in the process of upgrading my Moodle site from version 3.11 to 4.1, but I want to perform a clean installation of version 4.1 and then restore the courses from the original site.

The problem arises when restoring courses in version 4.1, as all aliases for resources linked to repositories are lost during the restoration.

In version 3.11, course resources are referenced via aliases to a “File system” repository. On the new site with Moodle 4.1, I have replicated this configuration as follows:

  • The “File system” repository has the same name and configuration on the new site.
  • The files are replicated in the same structure within /moodledata/repository.

When I restore the courses in Moodle 4.1, the aliases do not work, and the resource links are lost. If I restore the courses with the resources copied directly into the course (without using aliases), I have no issues. However, this is not a viable solution for me, as having multiple editions of the same courses would cause the Moodle server’s storage to skyrocket.

Question:

What solutions do you see to avoid the loss of aliases when restoring courses in Moodle 4.1? Is there anything else I need to configure to ensure that aliases are properly preserved on the new site?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

P.S.: My goal is to complete the upgrade to version 4.5, but I believe I cannot restore a course directly from version 3.11 to version 4.5. This is why I am transitioning through the intermediate version 4.1.
