Just one thing you didn't specify : the previous backups (not deleted) where already in a custom dir ? Or previously in Moodle internal file database storage ?

If the last, there's not automatic solution to delete them. Because deletion is only done for the same backup place that is currently used.
But doing some good search in the forums, you should find previous discussion indicating how to delete them ![wink]( "wink")
