You didn't explained much what you want to achieve exactly, and why?
If it's the whole pre-existing site you want to upgrade from 3.1 to 4.3, it's perhaps easier to upgrade your complete site, following the dedicated documentation.
Recovering courses, perhaps, but with (or without) user content? Or just courses, to be reused as new?
