Hi,
If some course backups are not made correctly, and generate error, there will be some ("temporary", the time of the backup) datas left in moodledata/temp/backup subdirs. You could check that.
Can't this be explained (only) by backup files being bigger and bigger day after day? Or because you have more backup files day after day?
For a better understanding, it would be interesting to know the number of courses you have, your automatic backup settings...
