I thought, now that I have more idea where to look I might try the small course import again. That has produced the the folder and files in the temp\backup folder and this one does have contents in the moodle_backup.xml I can see what it is supposed to step through, but it isn't stepping through, it just spins the wheel of doom for about 2 hours and goes to a 500 error. What's worse is I'm only trying to import the topic names and images in the tile format, nothing of significance, no questions / quizzes / scorms nothing of substance and it just isn't happening.
This is all so very depressing as I now have five courses I need to restore. I just gave it a go on the off chance that the import might work.
