Asynchronous - it is one of the settings in Moodle so you can wander off and do other stuff whilst it processes. I currently have it turned off.
I did try late yesterday a back up from about a year ago and that restored just fine and that would have been a Moosh backup from a Moodle 3. So maybe you are onto something - maybe it is the backup rather than the restore.
I shall try again on the backup part.
