How can I move topic 3 from Course A to become topic 6 of Course B?

I know backup and restore is the answer - but so far, it appears that topic 3 from Course A merges with topic 3 of Course B (I know - I just manually deleted all the files!!)  How can I get a topic from one course to be restored as a different topic number in a new course?
