How to manage backups using backup_auto_storage with "Specified directory for automated backups"

by Steve Massicotte.

We got 2 instances of Moodle. One with about 1000 courses and another with 10 000 by year. Originally, we were using "Course backup filearea" to store the backups. To reduce storage use by the moodledata we are planning to move to "Specified directory for automated backups".

We actually change this setting for our small instance. At that moment we realised that all the backups are place in one single directory. Even with our small instance we got thousands of files in this single directory. If we decided to do it with our large instance, it will be tens of thousands of files in a directory. Even a "ls" command will take a lot of time. We can even reach OS limit.

In short, is there a way or a configuration or a tracker to manage the fact that using  "Specified directory for automated backups" place a lot of file in a single directory ?

Thanks
