Hi ken, thanks for the reply and info. Yes, that sounds very similar to what is happening here.

As a short term solution, I have reduced the 'Clean up temporary data files older than tempdatafoldercleanup' setting to 6 hours (it was 2 days). The cron tasks 'Delete stale temp files
\core\task\file_temp_cleanup_task' is running every 6 hours. This is keeping a handle on the temp\backup folder growing to such an extent that it uses up all the space but still confused about the backup files being created here. I have checked the backup files that have failed, and I can see that a large number of activities and resources have been deleted from the courses and are in the recycle bin, but cannot see in reports for that course(s) or logs that a backup was taken by user? Would this show? So I presume that the act of trashing the files and activities and resources is kicking off a course backup, which then fails? i.e. where you said "Recyclebin process makes a backup of whatever was deleted." So this will amke a complete backup of course? All autobackups are off. But recycle bin is set to 28 days!
Thanks in advance.
