Automated backup report - difference between Unfinished and Pending?

Hi Moodlers,

I've seen a few recent posts related to this topic, but none that really answered my question.

In the Automated course backups report (Site administration > Reports > Backups) and the associated email report, what is the difference between the following statuses?

  1. Unfinished
  2. Course backup ad hoc task pending
  3. Automated backup pending

Particularly, we've started getting one course marked as "Unfinished", even though the scheduled task logs indicate that all courses needing a backup were successfully added to the ad-hoc task queue. If a course is added to the ad-hoc task queue successfully, I would expect that it would get a status of #2 or #3.

The docs page for Automated course backup does mention the Unfinished status, although it does not have anything about the other two.

https://docs.moodle.org/39/en/Automated_course_backup

If it is successfully added to the ad-hoc task queue, I am not sure why it would be marked as Unfinished. I think the description on that page might not have been updated for the recent addition of ad-hoc tasks for backups. The automated course backup task now ends basically before any backups happen at all, since they all get handled through the ad-hoc task queue!

I did see recommendations in some topics (thank you Ken!) to check moodledata/temp/backups, but all I have in there are *.log files. There is no contenthash directory that might be holding some old backup files.

Any insight would be much appreciated! 😀

(Edit: I should mention that the course being marked Unfinished does seem to backup successfully. But, I am concerned that the Unfinished status could indicate some issue happening temporarily/intermittently, that is a harbinger of worse things to come!)
