Never quite understood why backups are hidden in moodledata. Sure handy if things crash but unless moodledata is off site still all eggs in one basket.
I set a directory for backups. I use ssh to copy them over to a free trial VPS with 40 gb of space and use another cron script to keep backups from consuming too much space on both servers
