Not a programmer (you know that of me), but have something you might need to consider. First, odd/even alt days is a good idea ... breaks apart auto, but ... can think of an issue even if you got that to work ... that 1 gigantic course ... like 140Gig ... if that course id isn't placed at the bottom of the list for odd day auto's, and it happens to be an id that's first or in the middle of the odd day course ID's, auto very well could fail at that course ... the remaining never do get backed up.
Do encourage you to continue, however, as this is sorely needed for many moodles!
