So I took the plunge. Since my 2.8.11 (Build: 20160314) Moodle was built by my cPanel, I thought I'd try there first.

METHOD ONE

  1. renamed my classroom folder to classroom-original
  2. created a new empty folder named classroom
  3. attempted an install
  4. response: "there's already a folder by that name on the server"
  5. so i erased the classroom folder
  6. attempted another install
  7. this time the message was "there was previously a folder with a Moodle in it somewhere on this server; please obliterate that folder and try again."

There I was with no way to back up my entire Moodle system while, at the same time, being asked to destroy my running Moodle. That was too much for me so I backed out of the cPanel "installer," deleted the (still) empty classroom folder and renamed classroom-original to classroom.

Naturally, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I found my original Moodle was still working. I had feared that perhaps Snoopy Snoopy cPanel had found my original Moodle and deleted it for me. It didn't.

Tomorrow, Mac and Sherman's Most Excellent Adventure is trying to upgrade my Moodle using the moodle.org method. Tomorrow I get to find out what's up with the mystery .zip file that is the only result of a Moodle "update"download from moodle.org

Can't wait to find out.

Before exiting, I typed "moodle update step by step" and "step by step" in the Backup and restore page. No articles were displayed.
