Thanks for your detailed response. It is far more difficult than I had hoped but at least there is a way forward.
A "download manager" (at least that is what we called them 20 years ago) is a standalone app for downloading files. Often they can open multiple connections to speed up a download and they can resume broken downloads, both of which browsers are bad at (at least they have been in the past). For me, it was just the resuming broken downloads that I wanted as downloading an 800MB file is not easy on my internet connection.
