Automated backups skip courses not modified - what does it check to see if the course has been modified?

Hi all

When "Skip courses not modified since previous backup" is ticked, what does Moodle use to determine that the course has been modified? I'm guessing it is something in the log as it requires logging to be enabled. Does enrolling a student class as change for example?
