Jonathan,
Though you have closed this post, I see Ken Task has been helping you. Ken is a wonderfully knowledgeable poster, and has helped me numerous times (thank yo uvery much Ken)
This particular issue has plagued me for a long time in my own shared hosting of Moodle. I suspect now that the issue is mostly due to the tim eit takes to perform the final step in backing up, that is, copying it to the designated directory.
If I could only know for certain what causes a timeout in copying, I could contact my provider and "beg" for more resources. But I don't want to do that unless I could state with certainty it would fix my problem.
For me, my automated backups backup courses that are generally less than 300MB. Anything more than that always fails. Curiously, if I try to manually back them up, it works! That's my conundrum...why it works manually but not automated?
Additionally, I have experimented with what will work in a backup and what won't. Apparently, when I don't ask it to backup assignments as part of the backup package, it always works. Of course, this is not acceptable, since I always need a full backup, not a partial one.
So, I am asking if, since you closed this post, if you have found anything else that worked for you. If so, would you mind sharing?
Thanks.
