Incremental backups

by Albert Ramsbottom.

We currently planning to move all our upgraded moodles to Azure cloud and use Azure SMB shares to back our Moodles.

Currently the largest share is 5TB which wont get close to our 300GB moodles that need backing up for 30 days.

So my thoughts on this matter are that we need incremental backups for the moodledata directory. Or restrict the amount of TAR backups by keeping 7 days worth and then a weekly one for a month.

So we would end up with 5 weekly backups and 7 daily backups. In which case we could only restore for 7 days and after it would have to be 7 days apart. This is probably not ideal

As suggested above an incremental backup of the moodle data folder would be ideal.

Rsync is good for this but I am struggling to comprehend how we would do this as we would need a full backup every 30 days and incremental backups on a daily basis.

I suppose the issues here are how do we script rsync to create a full copy to one share folder and then incremental copies to daily folders for 30 days after.

Also how would we out these back together if we needed a restore for a certain day of the month??

Any ideas or different suggestions would be great
