System not accessible during database dump

I am finding that when we do a database dump for our Moodle 3.0.4 the site (LMS) is not available to the users. Is there anything that can be done to still be able to do the backup and users access the system? Our database is about 8GB when backed up. 

Using Moodle 3.0.4 LAMP.
