"There are no categories or existing courses you can restore to."

I'm running Moodle 2.6 on what is essentially a LAMP stack via Amazon AWS / EC2.

I downloaded a backup file from the Mt. Orange Demo (http://school.demo.moodle.net/) via "Front Page Settings"> Backup. When I try to restore using this back up file on my own Moodle instance, it gives me the following error (also in the title):
"There are no categories or existing courses you can restore to."

So in response to this error, I created a course category with an "empty" (default?) course, and tried the restore again, only to get the same message. What gives? The course restore documentation (http://docs.moodle.org/26/en/Course_restore) says I should be prompted to restore the backup as a new course.

So I want to know how to properly "export" the Mount Orange school demo into my own Moodle instance. Any suggestions?
